Learning all about Parts of a Plant!

Plant research has been underway on board and I find them reading about plants, writing books about plants, studying their own seeds, and writing poetry about plants!  I simply love how they take off in their own learning!  They had some amazing questions they asked and answered!  They also got to share with the crew their new learning!

Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds!

Since we are learning about the parts of a plant we HAD to spend time exploring seeds and the fruit that keeps them safe! It was a great opportunity to record observations and to county large numbers!

Helping the Homeless!

 

Today the author of the book Cargo and the woman in the Flowered Hat came to visit.  Allison Rose, a friend of Mrs. Brims,  wrote the book that inspired us to collect clothes for the homeless shelter in St. Augustine.  She was here to also talk about what it was like to publish a book and answer all the questions our crew had.  It was awesome to have these 2nd graders come to visit and speak with her as well!!

 

 

Which plant parts do we eat?

This crew LOVES to eat, but first we started with sorting the parts of the plant using food!  We read some books and then they had time to revise their thinking if they needed.  Some plant parts surprised them!  

At first this group thought a squash was a root but it is really a fruit!

They ate, and ate, and ate!  Snow peas and carrots were a favorite!

This crew knows how to make a mess.... and clean it up!

Mrs. Brim FUN!

On the same day we have been learning about EMPATHY Mrs. Brim arrives with the perfect book!  This book called "The Three Questions" gave the crew the chance to determine what the author wanted them to learn.  They decided the author wants for them to think with their HEART and not only their head!
